Full Renovation and Artist Studio Addition
A light-filled artist studio served as the catalyst for this whole-home renovation and addition, which also introduced a new kitchen, an expanded primary suite, and a pool. With their children grown and out of the house, the homeowners set out to reimagine the home to better support their current lifestyle — balancing generous gathering spaces for family visits with quiet, resort-like retreats for creativity and relaxation.
The rear addition spans both floors of the home, with a spacious primary suite on the first floor and a large art studio above. Both spaces were designed to maximize natural light through strategically placed windows that preserve privacy from neighboring properties. The primary bath features a spa-like wet room with a soaking tub and shower, heated floors, and hand-cut tile. To maintain a clean, minimal aesthetic, the shower glass was installed within recessed channels in the walls and floor, eliminating the need for visible hardware.
The project also included a small kitchen bump-out that dramatically improved functionality and storage. Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry provides ample concealed storage, while two integrated cabinet doors discreetly open to reveal the entrance to the basement — a detail that seamlessly blends practicality with craftsmanship.
One of the project’s greatest challenges was navigating the root system of a 150-year-old oak tree in declining health. Its roots extended beneath the crawlspace and directly into the path of the new foundation, requiring careful excavation to avoid damaging the existing structure. Extensive attention was also paid to matching the home’s historic detailing, including custom-milled rafter tails fabricated to replicate the original profiles exactly.
The finished home feels both restorative and welcoming. A marble-clad wet room, shaded porches overlooking the pool, and a kitchen with views to the outdoors from nearly every angle create a home designed equally for entertaining, retreat, and everyday living.
